Becoming a sports massage therapist may be something you have considered but thought it was out of your reach – or you maybe have thought of escaping from the rat-race of nine-to-five working and setting up a business of your own.
With the huge changes that are happening in our society at the moment, with the increasing stress that many people are experiencing in their everyday lives, massage is becoming more and more popular. From being a minority interest only a few years ago, today the demand has increased massively. For example, 10 years ago at Wellbeing Fitness, we employed two massage therapists and now we’ve tripled the number and are set to increase it even more.
So if ever there was a time to retrain and do something different, it is now. With this in mind we have established:
The Wellbeing Fitness Training Centre
Wellbeing Fitness has been in business for ten years now. We have always prided ourselves on offering a first class, private service in luxury surroundings for discerning clients. And the same standards are applied to the Wellbeing Fitness Training Centre. Our Director of Education, Ian Spiby spent 18 years as a Head of Department at Northampton University and so is in a perfect position to oversee the rigorous standards of the course.
Kieran Sharpe who is the Course Director has long experience and qualifications for delivering the massage course – and was recently awarded an “outstanding” grade in an OFSTED inspection. And the validating body is Think Tree Hub, the professional association service for the healthcare, education, wellness and wellbeing industry. At the end of the course you will have a recognised Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy – and what is more, FREE OF CHARGE, your first year’s insurance which will enable you to practice anywhere in the UK.
Not only that but you will be a member of Thinktree Hub with a whole raft of benefits to aid you in your new professional career. (See below*)
Read what our Managing Director, Ian Ryves, has to say:
“As a very practical person, I wanted to make sure that this massage course was suitable for practical people – people who want hands-on experience which will actually equip them to do the job by the end of the course – not just weeks of theory which doesn’t seem to bear any relationship to real life. So with this in mind I have kept an eye on it to make sure it achieves those objectives. And I am so convinced of its practical value, that I put the Wellbeing staff who are not massage-qualified, through this course”
The Wellbeing Fitness Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy
The Wellbeing Fitness Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy is a fully accredited Level 3 qualification aimed at developing the knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed for a career as a Sports Massage Therapist, either employed or self-employed. This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for massage and was developed collaboratively with Thinktree Hub, the International Professional Association service for the education, healthcare, wellness and wellbeing industries.
What does this qualification offer?
The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements needed to work effectively and efficiently as a sports massage therapist. This includes anatomy and physiology, professional practice, an understanding of the principles of health and fitness and how to provide sports massage treatments. The Level 3 sports massage therapist will be able to work safely and effectively on dysfunctional tissue in a range of contexts, to include: pre-event, post event, intra-event and for maintenance purposes.
The teaching staff are all highly qualified and experienced and our Course Director, Kieran Sharpe recently received the award of “outstanding” in an OFSTED inspection
Units & Structure
The structure of the qualification is comprised of 5 units, which are all mandatory.
- - Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
- - Principles of health and fitness.
- - Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction.
- - Professional practice in sports massage.
- - Sports massage treatments. What could this qualification lead to? Learners who complete the qualification will be able to gain employment to work as a sports massage therapist. A specific feature of this course is that all students who graduate will obtain, FREE OF CHARGE, insurance to cover their first year of professional practice.
The practical part of the course will be taught over 10 Sundays from 3.30 – 8.00pm, beginning on Sunday October 6th and ending on Sunday December 15th with a half-term break on Sunday 10th November. In addition to the Sunday sessions, students will be expected to do homework, which is available on our special online hub.
To join our sports massage course you must be over 16 years old, physically able to do the work and have good communication skills. There is no upper age limit, with mature students especially welcome.
All study material will be provided to help you prepare for the practical training. In addition, you will be required to do home study, with all materials provided via our online training hub
Why choose this course?
Our aim in teaching you on this course is to prepare you by the end, to be as ready, prepared and confident to take your place in the industry as a sports massage therapist as it is possible to be. This could be working as an employee with another organisation, as a self-employed practitioner setting up on your own or even as part of our team at Wellbeing Fitness. To do this, we have a number of added-value extras that most other companies are unable to provide.
Unlike many training providers, including further education colleges, Wellbeing Fitness is an organisation that provides personal training and sports massage to actual clients, delivering over 700 sessions per month. So you will be trained by a company at the heart of the industry, who are offering therapies to real clients. We employ 10 sports massage therapists and personal trainers and we are always looking for talented newly-qualified therapists and personal trainers to join our team. We prefer to offer jobs to our former students before advertising more widely. As part of the course we hold regular clinics attended by our clients where under supervision you can put your new skills to the test and gain some invaluable real-life experience. Thus you will get to practice on a range of ages and body types and receive feedback from the clients themselves.
Because we are part of the wellness industry we are also able to offer opportunities for work-experience and/or shadowing our therapists in order to extend the range of your experience and expertise while engaged on the course.
The cost of the course is £1250.00, which will include all your registration, tuition and insurance for the first year of your practice after qualifying.
Because the government have a policy of encouraging people to develop small businesses, there is the likelihood that if you are up-skilling yourself with the intention of setting up a private massage concern, then funding might be available from your local council.
So what do I do now?
Step 1. If you’re interested in the course and/or want to know more about it, fill in your details below and click on the “Submit” button. We will then send you a copy of the Prospectus and an application form. If you have any questions that are not covered by the Prospectus, you are welcome to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. However, if after reading the Prospectus you decide to apply, fill in the application form and either send it by email to email@example.com or post it to Head Office, Wellbeing Fitness, 4A Park Street, Towcester NN12 6DA.
This will enable us to assess your initial suitability. We pride ourselves on enrolling students who have the potential to be good massage therapists. We are not so concerned with purely academic ability but find that personality and an aptitude for the practical side is more important in an industry where the relationship between the therapist and the client is all-important. Each course is strictly limited to a maximum of 14 students so that we are able to provide each participant with individual tuition.
Step 2. We will contact you if we think you have the potential to succeed on the course, and ask you to come in and see us at a mutually agreed time where we can ask any further questions and you can also ask things of us.
Step 3. If all goes well, we will offer you a place – and you then register on the course. You can then EITHER pay the full amount of the fee (£1250) and receive a 10% discount OR you can pay a deposit of £200 and the remainder of £1050, 7 days before the course start date.
Step 4. Before the start-date you will receive joining instructions and full details about course materials. We will also recommend some pre-reading if you want to get ahead before you start the course.
Step 5. You will arrive at Wellbeing Fitness, Towcester branch (Unit 4 Lucas Bridge Business Park, Old Green’s Norton Road, Towcester NN12 8AX) on Sunday 6 October at 3.30 for your Induction and to meet your tutors and fellow students. As well as the session which will be mainly practical and hands-on, each week you will be given guidance as to the work you need to do online before the following Sunday.
Practical tip: There are tea and coffee-making facilities on site but you might wish to bring some food to sustain you through the session. There will be a half-hour break approximately half way through
At all times you will be given help and advice by our experienced tutors so that at no point will you feel out of your depth or not know what to do or where to go next.
